Kelly Slater World Champion 2005
Thirteen years ago Kelly Slater, then aged 20, was the youngest surfer ever to win the ASP Men's World Championship. He has now won the title again for a record breaking seventh time, making him also the oldest surfer ever to win the championship.
Disappointed rival Andy Irons needed to finish at least third in Florianopolis, Santa Catarina-Brazil, to keep the title race alive and have a chance of stealing the crown at the final event (Pipeline Hawaii, Dec 8-19) but he failed to get past the quarter-finals.
Victory in the event went to fellow American Damien Hobgood who beat home favorite, Brazilian Victor Ribas.
